"I drive 12 miles to go to this particular store in Colonia. There is a closer one in New Brunswick, but Colonia is an excellent, clean, and very friendly store to shop in. The employees are second to none, and they have more variety than a lot of larger stores do. I don't have anything bad to say about New Brunswick mind you, it is just merely the location of that store." -David B

"We witnessed first-hand the rising of your Nicholas Market and look forward to more renovations. While people are often quick to complain, I / we wanted to take a moment to commend. You have breathed life into this location. The store is cosmetically appealing and the selections and quality have improved. We still see many of the same faces, along with new employees, and the customer service has been and continues to be outstanding. Those in the store are friendly and eager to assist. Kudos to the staff at this store and your entire team. We wish you continued success and all the best. Sincerely, loyal shoppers." -The Distler Family

"I love this store. Friendly staff... no attitude. Prepared foods, for a single guy like me, are outstanding. Fish Department great too. During my annual New Year's Day Open House your store provided a great Kale salad, fish cakes and shrimp. In my opinion, one of the best food stores in the area." -John S

"For the past 35 years we have been an A&P shopper. The store is near to us in Glen Rock and we got to know the staff on a first name basis. Since being taken over by ACME it has not been the same. We tried Nicholas Market two months ago and have not back to the ACME. Your butcher has cut meat for me better than I ever received from the A&P. Your produce and veggies are always fresh as is your fish and my wife and I could not be happier with the store, plus your prices are better. The store is clean, the staff is friendly and professional and your take-out foods and bakery are great. We are now Nicholas Market customers." -Donald k.

"The Nicolas Market in Colonia is an amazing, clean, friendly place to shop. Despite its smaller size (compared to the mega stores) this store always has what I need! They are well stocked and items are reachable, not stocked to the ceiling (where you can't reach) or in complex spring-loaded cases (that I can't manage) like other stores. I have a disability and shopping is a bit of a challenge. This smaller, impeccably clean, 'walkable' store, whose staff always offers assist makes it so much easier!   It is the hometown feel, the kindness of all the staff - particularly the young men that gather the carts in the parking lot, who always come over and help me load the car, that keep me coming back! Thanks for providing me an opportunity to thank these employees for the great work they do. I really appreciate it!"  -Patricia

Our Supermarkets in NJ Care About Our Communities

At Nicholas Markets, we want to be more than just any other local grocery store. Our supermarkets in N.J. strive to give back to the communities that we serve in a variety of ways. From our plan to provide excellent customer experiences to our environmental commitment as a green business, Nicholas Markets strives to be a grocery store that is a valuable member of the local community.

Nicholas Markets is a Green Business

Nowadays, many businesses are trying to go green and Nicholas Markets felt it was important to reduce the carbon footprint.

Here are just a few of the eco-friendly practices deployed at all of our local grocery stores:

  • Performing energy audits each year to measure and reduce energy at our N.J. supermarkets.
  • Replacing all lighting with energy efficient bulbs in all of our markets. We have been switching over since 2008.
  • Installing lighting controls for bathrooms, parking lots, and all multi-use office spaces.
  • Purchasing energy-saving equipment including ovens, refrigerators, and refrigerated cases. Some equipment at our local grocery stores is replaced every 4 years.
  • Installing energy-efficient windows during our remodel in 2008.
  • Deploying a reusable shopping bag program that pays consumers to use the bags.
  • Sourcing more than 70% of seafood from wild caught sources. Farm raised fish is 90% green.
  • Carrying over 800 organics, biodegradable, and fair-trade products at our N.J. supermarkets.
  • Consistently cleaning parking lots and landscaped areas.
  • Sharing information about these initiatives so other businesses will be inspired to do the same!
  • Natural gas generator added in our North Haledon location and coming soon to all locations.

Nicholas Markets to Make Use of Combined Heat and Power (CHP) Facility

The North Haledon location features a 350 kW natural gas engine generator that is expected to produce 2,673,072 kWh and 16,932 MMBtu of utilized waste heat annually. Average annual costs savings are projected to total $243,000.

Nicholas Markets plans to use the majority of the electricity and all waste heat produced from the CHP unit for process cooling, space heating and water heating. The overall system efficiency is estimated at 83 percent. In the event of a power outage, the CHP unit is designed to run independently from the grid and act as a standalone power source by using black start and islanding capabilities.
